F.A.Q.

An EAS (Electronic Article Surveillance) system is a security technology used by retail stores to prevent theft. It works by attaching special tags or labels to merchandise. These tags communicate with detection antennas placed at store exits. If an item with an active tag passes through without being deactivated at checkout, the system triggers an alarm, alerting staff to a potential theft attempt.

  • RF (Radio Frequency) – Uses radio waves to detect tags. It is widely used in clothing stores and supermarkets due to its affordability and ease of use. It's the most popular choice for local retail boutiques.
  • AM (Acousto-Magnetic) – Uses magnetic fields for detection. It's also used for clothing of bigger retail companies due to its higher price. It offers better performance in environments with a lot of metal or electronic interference, making it ideal for pharmacies, electronics stores, and high-end retail.
  • Antennas (pedestals or gates) – Placed at store exits to detect active tags.
  • Tags and labels – Attached to merchandise to trigger an alert if not removed or deactivated.
  • Detachers and deactivators – Used at checkout to remove or disable the tags so customers can leave without setting off an alarm.
  • Hard tags – Reusable plastic security tags typically attached to clothing and removed at checkout.
  • Soft tags (or labels) – Adhesive security labels, often used on books, cosmetics, or packaged goods. These are deactivated at checkout and cannot be reused.
  • Hard tags are designed to go through fabric or attach to items in a way that prevents damage, using pin or lanyard attachments. Soft labels have strong adhesive but are designed to be removed without leaving residue on packaging.

  • Soft labels – Deactivated using an electronic deactivation pad at checkout.
  • Hard tags – Removed using a detacher, a specialized tool at the counter that releases the locking mechanism.
  • Clothing – Hard tags should be placed on seams or labels to avoid damaging fabric.
  • Accessories – Lanyards or specialized tags work well for handbags, sunglasses, or shoes.
  • Electronics – Soft labels should be placed in a way that won’t interfere with packaging, barcodes, or functionality.
